Don't assume today's convention is the only option. The historical record shows that violin support methods have changed considerably over time, and there's no reason to treat the current default as final.
Pay attention to technique, not just equipment. Teachers interviewed for this study noted that tension can arise either way, whether from a raised shoulder compensating for no rest, or a locked arm caused by an ill-fitting one.
Consider the whole setup, not just the rest. Violin size, chin rest type, and where the instrument sits on the shoulder all interact with the shoulder rest itself. These factors are best evaluated together.
Expect change as students grow. Interviewees noted that younger players may need their setup reassessed far more often than adults, whose bodies have largely stopped changing.
If you're curious about switching, ease into it gradually. One interviewed teacher recommended practicing without a shoulder rest for just two minutes per session at first, rather than switching all at once.
Teachers, it's worth reflecting on your own influence. Given that over three-quarters of survey respondents named their own teacher as a key influence, it may be worth considering whether your own preferences are limiting your students' opportunities to explore other options.
